Does Reddit allow AI-generated posts? 10 subreddits that ban them (2026)
By the Content Desk team · Updated
Key takeaways
- The bans come from individual communities. Of 70 popular subreddits we checked in November 2026, 10 ban AI-generated posts, answers or AI-driven submissions in their own rules.
- They include some of the largest: r/AskReddit (about 60 million members), r/Showerthoughts (34 million), r/LifeProTips (23 million) and r/NoStupidQuestions (7.6 million).
- The wording varies: some ban AI posts, r/NoStupidQuestions bans accounts that use AI to answer, r/LifeProTips removes text "generated or altered by AI", and r/productivity bans "LLM generation of any kind".
- The penalty can be the account, not just the post: r/NoStupidQuestions and r/Entrepreneur mention bans.
- Another 12 communities have no ban but read as skeptical of AI hype.
The 10 subreddits that ban AI-generated posts
| Subreddit | Members | The rule, in its own words |
|---|---|---|
| r/AskReddit | 60.1M | "Spam, machine-generated content, and karma farming are not permitted." |
| r/Showerthoughts | 34.2M | "AI-generated content, copied-and-pasted content, and other such unoriginal content is strictly forbidden." |
| r/LifeProTips | 23.1M | "Posts or comments that ... appear to be generated or altered by AI will be removed." |
| r/InternetIsBeautiful | 16.6M | "submissions are not allowed if their primary content is produced by AI, or if AI is used to drive functionality" |
| r/NoStupidQuestions | 7.6M | "Accounts using AI to generate answers will be banned." |
| r/socialskills | 6.4M | "No AI-Generated content - Its a support sub for humans." |
| r/Entrepreneur | 5.3M | "AI-generated posts or comments are not permitted." |
| r/unpopularopinion | 5M | "AI/ChatGPT, low effort, clickbait, rage bait, and/or gotcha posts are subject to removal." |
| r/productivity | 4.3M | "No AI posts or comments allowed (no LLM generation of any kind is permitted at all)" |
| r/getdisciplined | 2.2M | "No AI-generated content (from our reading of the rules; posting also needs a 30-day-old account and 200+ karma)" |
Quotes are from each community's sidebar as of 6 November 2026; r/getdisciplined is from an earlier reading of its rules.
What the different wordings mean
- AI-written posts are banned in r/Showerthoughts, r/Entrepreneur, r/unpopularopinion, r/socialskills and r/getdisciplined.
- AI-written answers get the account banned in r/NoStupidQuestions.
- Even AI-edited text is out in r/LifeProTips ("generated or altered by AI") and r/productivity ("no LLM generation of any kind").
- AI-driven websites can't be submitted to r/InternetIsBeautiful, which matters if what you built runs on AI.
- Machine-generated content and karma farming are both named in r/AskReddit's rules.
Communities that are skeptical without a ban
12 more read as tired of AI hype in their rules or their top posts, though we found no outright ban: r/Futurology, r/languagelearning, r/Android, r/jobs, r/startups, r/EnglishLearning, r/androidapps, r/ProductivityApps, r/IELTS, r/LearningEnglish, r/JudgeMyAccent, r/TOEFL. In these, a post that leads with "AI" in the title starts at a disadvantage.
What to do instead
- Write from your own experience. The top posts in these communities are mostly first person: 85% of the text posts among r/LifeProTips' biggest of the year, and 88% in r/NoStupidQuestions.
- Use tools for planning, not wording. A list of the community's format rules and the points you want to make is fine; the sentences should be yours.
- Answer questions where you know the subject. It's how reputation is built in communities like r/explainlikeimfive, where the top answers run about 60 words.
In these communities the drafting tool on this site writes no post at all. It gives a plan to write from: the format rules, an angle from your own experience, and what gets removed.
How we checked
On 6 November 2026 we read 64 subreddits through Reddit's own developer platform: each sidebar, the 25 most upvoted posts of the past year in full, and the top comments on each sub's five biggest posts. Six more came from an earlier pass that read sidebars only, for 70 in all. Reddit didn't let us read each community's separate Rules tab, so where a sidebar was empty we say so, and the guide for that sub tells you to check the Rules tab before posting. Rules change; treat dates as part of the answer.
Questions people ask
Does Reddit ban AI-generated content?
The bans we found are set by individual subreddits, not Reddit as a whole. Ten of the 70 popular communities we checked in November 2026 forbid AI-generated posts or answers, including r/AskReddit, r/Showerthoughts, r/LifeProTips and r/NoStupidQuestions.
Can I use AI to fix the grammar of a Reddit post?
It depends on the community. r/productivity bans "LLM generation of any kind", and r/LifeProTips removes posts that appear "generated or altered by AI". Where the rules are that strict, write and edit the post yourself.
What happens if you post AI-generated text on Reddit?
The rules we read describe removal, and in some communities a ban: r/NoStupidQuestions says accounts using AI to generate answers will be banned, and r/Entrepreneur says AI content may result in a ban.
Is karma farming allowed on Reddit?
Not in r/AskReddit, which lists "karma farming" next to spam and machine-generated content as not permitted. Building a reputation by genuinely answering questions in communities you know is the accepted way.
